ALAIN POCOBELLI
Cave & Technical Diving Instructor Trainer
Co-founder, CDT Mexico
Presentation
Alain Pocobelli was born in Switzerland and has been a diving professional since 2003. He is fluent in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, and has been based in Mexico since 2005.
Over the course of his career, Alain has logged more than 7,300 dives worldwide, including dives in Mexico, Belize, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Egypt, the Maldives, and Palau. His experience includes more than 3,800 cave dives in Mexico, along with technical dives requiring advanced equipment and procedures, such as twinsets, sidemount, stage and decompression cylinders, exploration, and survey work.
Alain began teaching technical and overhead diving in the mid-2000s. He became an Advanced Nitrox and Cavern Instructor in 2005, followed by Intro to Cave Instructor in 2008. Between 2008 and 2010, he participated in survey and exploration projects in several Mexican cave systems, including Dreamgate, Pierre’s P, Xunaan Ha, and Hol Kin.
From 2012 to 2019, he was part of the GoSideMount team as an Official Razor Cave Instructor, contributing to the development and teaching of modern sidemount techniques during a period of rapid evolution in configuration and methodology.
In 2015, building on his experience as a cave diver, explorer, and instructor, Alain became a TDI Instructor Trainer and Evaluator status, and has since been actively involved in training and evaluating instructors at the highest levels.
Today, Alain continues to teach cave and technical diving in Mexico, with a strong focus on instructor development, advanced training, and ongoing involvement in projects within the local cave diving community.

Teaching Philosophy
Alain’s teaching is based on clarity, structure, and accountability. He believes that technical and cave diving must be taught with a strong emphasis on fundamentals, progressive skill development, and a clear understanding of why procedures exist — not just how to execute them.
Training is performance-based, not time-based. Time is used as needed to ensure that skills are stable, consistent, and transferable beyond the training environment. Standards define minimum requirements, not objectives.
Courses are adapted to each diver’s background and experience, while maintaining clear expectations and non-negotiable performance criteria. The goal is not certification, but competence, autonomy, and conservative decision-making in real dive conditions.
Alain expects students to be engaged, analytical, and willing to question what they are taught. In return, he provides direct feedback, structured progression, and instruction focused on precision and reliability rather than comfort.
His objective is to train divers who can plan, execute, and evaluate dives responsibly as autonomous teammates.
